Waitārere Beach Surf Club

Waitārere Beach Surf Club

Overview

Te Whare o Waitā, the new Levin Waitārere Surf Life Saving Club facility, is a modern 480m² two storey building designed to support both surf lifesaving operations and the wider Waitārere community for generations to come. Replacing the original clubrooms and positioned closer to the beachfront, the facility provides improved functionality, accessibility, and resilience while strengthening the club's ability to serve one of the region's most popular coastal destinations.

The project was developed through extensive collaboration between the Levin Waitārere Surf Life Saving Club, Horowhenua District Council, local stakeholders, and iwi representatives. This partnership helped ensure the building reflected both the practical needs of the surf club and the cultural significance of the site. The name Te Whare o Waitā was gifted to the project, recognising the connection between the facility, the coastline, and the community it serves.

The ground floor houses large equipment storage areas and changing facilities essential for surf lifesaving operations, while the upper level features a commercial kitchen, committee room, watch tower, generous open-plan lounge spaces, and outdoor decks with panoramic coastal views. Lift access between both levels ensures the facility is accessible to all users.

Homestead was privileged to work alongside the project stakeholders from the early design phase through to completion, helping bring a shared vision to life. The result is a landmark community asset that not only enhances beach safety and operational capability but also provides a welcoming gathering place for club members, residents, and visitors alike.

The project was a finalist in the Dulux Colour Awards 2024 for commercial interiors (public and hospitality).
