The Champion Street Development in Cannons Creek, Porirua, was delivered in partnership with Kāinga Ora to provide high-quality, sustainable housing for the local community. Engaged under a full design and build contract, Homestead worked collaboratively with stakeholders from concept through to completion, delivering 14 thoughtfully designed one-bedroom apartments, including four fully accessible ground-floor homes.
The project was driven by a vision of creating warm, healthy, and durable homes that would provide long-term value for residents while supporting the increasing demand for quality housing. Every aspect of the development was carefully considered to maximise comfort, accessibility, and operational efficiency, ensuring the homes were both practical and future-focused.
A key feature of the project was the use of precast concrete construction, which provided significant benefits in durability, thermal performance, low maintenance requirements, and construction efficiency. This approach helped deliver homes that are not only built to last but also provide healthier and more energy-efficient living environments for residents.
Sustainability was a core project objective, with the development achieving Homestar 6 certification. Designed to exceed the certification requirements, the homes deliver improved energy efficiency, comfort, and environmental performance, helping reduce ongoing operating costs while supporting healthier living outcomes.
Completed in just nine months, the project demonstrates the value of an integrated design and build approach, bringing together efficient delivery, innovative construction methods, and strong stakeholder collaboration. The quality and impact of the development were further recognised when it was named a finalist in the 2021 Property Industry Awards in the Community and Affordable Housing category.
The completed development stands as an example of how thoughtful design, sustainable construction, and strong partnerships can create high-quality housing that delivers lasting benefits for residents and the wider community.
