Lyall Bay Surf Life Saving Club

Lyall Bay Surf Life Saving Club

Overview

The Lyall Bay Surf Life Saving Club redevelopment delivered a modern, purpose-built facility for one of New Zealand's most iconic surf lifesaving organisations. Established in 1910, the club holds a significant place in New Zealand's surf lifesaving history, and the new building was designed to honour that legacy while providing contemporary facilities capable of supporting future generations of volunteers, members, and beachgoers.

Following the demolition of the original 1950s-era clubrooms, Homestead was engaged to construct the new architecturally designed facility, working alongside Archaus to bring a distinctive and highly durable coastal building to life. Located on Wellington's exposed south coast, the design carefully balances functionality, resilience, and architectural expression, ensuring the building can withstand the demands of a harsh marine environment while providing a welcoming community asset.

A defining feature of the project is its striking use of precast concrete. Multiple textures, patterns, and finishes were incorporated throughout the exterior, including glazed tile-inspired debossed panels, diamond-pattern detailing, exposed aggregate finishes, and brass inlays. The individually painted tiles create a vibrant visual connection to the surrounding coastal environment while giving the building a unique identity within the Lyall Bay landscape.

Spanning two levels, the facility has been designed to support both operational and community needs. The building accommodates surf lifesaving equipment storage, patrol and first aid spaces, changing facilities, public amenities, training areas, and member lounges, providing the infrastructure required to support year-round club activities and beach safety operations.

The quality of both the design and execution was recognised as a finalist in the NZIA Wellington Architecture Awards, reflecting the project's success in combining architectural excellence with practical community outcomes. The completed facility stands as a landmark on the Wellington waterfront, providing a high-quality home for the Lyall Bay Surf Life Saving Club while ensuring the organisation can continue its vital role in protecting and serving the community for decades to come.

Combining innovative construction techniques, architectural creativity, and robust coastal design, the project is a strong example of how thoughtful collaboration can deliver an enduring community asset that is both highly functional and visually distinctive.
